Are you, someone who always thinks 'I wish I was a morning person'... but you just can't get up early? Do you know waking up early has so many benefits, it gives you more time to do things you love, more time to spend with yourself and focus on your goals and so much more? Your morning sets the tone for the day. Every morning you have a new opportunity to become a better version of yourself.

I am not telling you that after reading this you will start to love mornings and I am not asking you to start doing it right away. These are a few habits which, if you inculcate in your life, will help you in becoming a morning person overtime.

So... Let's begin!!

1) - Sleep early

I know this is one of the most obvious things I can tell you but we know its not that simple, right? I have been a night owl pretty much from my late teens till the early twenties until I got my first job which required me to work from 6 AM - 3 PM. Yes, you heard that right. In my first job, I got an early morning shift and my login time was 6 AM which means I had to get up by 4:30 AM. Yes... it was pretty difficult in the beginning and I used to curse that job but there was no looking back after that.

But the truth is I never enjoyed getting up early because it was for work. I mean who wants to get up at 4:30 AM and just get dressed up half asleep and head to work like a zombie?

All these years I used to sleep late even if I had to get up early which is not what we want to do.

We want to sleep early to be able to wake up early. Most people need at least 7 hours of sleep to be able to function properly. If you want to wake up early, say by 5 AM every day, then you might want to calculate how much sleep you should get and what time should you hit the bed.

Now, the tip here is to lay in bed and relax even if you aren't tired. Just grab a book and develop a habit of reading a few pages and you would be surprised how quickly it will put you to sleep and can make a huge difference next morning.

2) - Set an Alarm and do not hit Snooze

Your first 20 minutes each morning are crucial to what you’ll accomplish in a day. If you are like most people hitting the snooze button once or twice before you get up, stop it right from today. As per the studies, snoozing the alarm may mess up with your brain and you wake up groggy and feeling tired.

The best practice should be finding an alarm system that works for you. Personally, for me, alarms have not really worked because I normally wake up before it rings or I do not listen to it at all. That's funny!

What has rather worked for me is keeping my curtains off before I go to sleep, like a brightly lit room with natural light does the job for me.

However, you can keep the phone away from your bed and use an app where you cannot turn the alarm off until you solve a simple math problem.

3) - Drink a full glass of water as soon as you wake up

We all know how important it is to have water first thing in the morning, but what is more important is, to have a glass or two of water before brushing your teeth. Having water this way helps the bacteria formed inside your mouth reach the gut and helps in better digestion. You will notice your immunity becoming more robust.

Our body is dehydrated without water the whole night and that's the reason we feel dizzy, tired, dry mouth and lips in the morning. Make it a habit to drink water every morning after getting up and you will see the improvement.

If you are not in a habit of drinking plain water, try any detox water of your choice and you will love it.

4) - Don't Use your phone

Many of us claim that we wake up early but we are just lying on our bed scrolling through social media. This is the worst morning habit.

Make a habit to get out of the bed the moment you wake up, no more lazing around. Using your phone first thing in the morning can affect your mood and mindset for the day. It can make you anxious and you suddenly start to worry about so many things. A lot of studies show that your phone emits white and blue lights which can mess up with your brain. A tip here is to put your phones on airplane mode or switch off the data before you sleep. This way you would not be bombarded with numerous emails and social media notifications the moment you get up and you will automatically not use your phone.

5)- Be Consistent

This is one of the key habits you need to stick to if you want to be a morning person. Your internal clock needs to reset and get used to a particular time to wake up and eventually you won't even need an alarm. This won't be easy initially and you will need a lot of self-discipline and practice. Consistency and patience is the key. Do not punish yourself if you fail to wake up someday. Instead, encourage yourself, talk positively, and try again.

6) - Morning Notes

Now, this can be done in two ways:

  • Simple braindump

  • Gratitude journaling

Both these ways are equally effective as it helps to cleanse your mind before you could kick start your day.

If you are someone who is just starting out with this you could go with the first method. It means writing down whatever comes to your mind, good or bad. Just express your feelings and let it go. It will help you unburden your mind, activate your brain, brings your thoughts into order, and gives you a motivation to start your day on a good note.

I usually swap between both these methods depending on my mood, however, my favorite is gratitude journaling. It is so powerful to lift your spirits, help you overcome internal struggles, gives you a perspective towards life. It can change you only for good. Being grateful for what you are and what you have can motivate you to get better and better.

7) - Get Moving

Mornings are the best time for a workout as they pump you for the rest of the day. When you are sleeping your muscles become tight, and a light workout in the morning can improve circulation, activate your body, boosts metabolism, and release feel-good hormones a.k.a Endorphins.

If you are someone who does not enjoy working out in the mornings then do at least a light yoga or 30 mins cardio to move your body a little bit and you will be amazed to see how your mood changes instantly.

And if you don't wish to do any of this, then just wake up and walk. Get your blood flowing! But move...

8) - Have a Healthy breakfast

This is so underestimated yet so important. Having a healthy and nutritious breakfast is an essential habit of being a morning person.

Our body needs the energy to get through the day and a power-packed breakfast is a must for our body and brains to work better.

When you are trying to be a morning person, deciding what to have every day can be a sluggish process, hence you need to start meal planning. It works like magic. But make sure you don't skip breakfast.

9) - Have a defined Purpose/Routine

Very few people talk about this but this is such a big factor if you are trying to become a morning person. Find a reason worth waking up early. A lot of people feel they are more productive at night but once you start waking up early you will feel that even mornings are a peaceful time to be productive. Start your day with a plan and a purpose. It will help you get out of bed early. Sleeping early won't help you get up early if you don't have a plan. Have a blueprint of your tasks for the day. I like to get up early because I find it much easier to meditate and do journaling in the morning and carry on with my morning routine.

10) - Track your Diet and Caffeine Intake

If you are a caffeine addict and you are wondering why don't you get to sleep on time then you have your answer. Many of us eat heavy food and drink tea/coffee in the evenings and find it hard to get sleep at night.

Avoid eating heavy food, sugary drinks, or anything which will mess up with your sleep before bedtime.

Try to have an early dinner and maintain a gap of two hours between your last meal and sleeping time. You can have some soothing tea before bed to help you get better sleep.
